YIMENG TENG

Bio:

Yimeng grew up in Suzhou, a beautiful ancient city in China. She received her Master of Architecture from the University of Virginia and is a registered architect in Virginia. Prior to graduate school, she finished her undergraduate degree in highway and bridge engineering from Southeast University in Nanjing. Being trained in both engineering and architecture, she has a passion of integrating the two for a better built environment. Currently she works with Ro Rockett Design in Los Angeles.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

I subscribed World Architecture Magazine in high school and got intrigued by a cover photo of a modern residence. It was a night shoot in the woods with warm yellow light coming out from a distance through large format clear window. It's very poetic.

What do you do?

I am an architect working with Ro Rockett Design in Los Angeles. Aside from working, I actively participate design competitions for young professionals as a hobby outside of work. I believe a good architect should keep challenging her mind.

What excites you in the work you do?

I am most excited about the idea that what we build can shape people's life. I used to work on educational buildings, and now I am in the residential field. No matter what type of architecture it is, what we draw will turn into something meaningful.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

I won an international competition for a modular stage set and developed the set together with the opera production company. After six months of work, we saw the production in performance on stage. I am very happy I could help with my knowledge.
