UGONNA OHAKIM

Perkins & Will

SAY IT LOUD - Toronto
Toronto Based Designer

Who or what inspires you professionally?

I’m inspired by humanity’s ability to create structure where none exists. Places shaped without architects often reveal our most fundamental needs, showing how culture, community, and human behaviour naturally translate into form.

UGONNA OHAKIM

Bio:

Great designer Ugonna works at the intersection of architecture, technology, and systems thinking. He believes design should foster curiosity and innovation, not just shape buildings. Driven by the challenge of embedding intelligence into design, he explores computational workflows, machine learning, and research-led approaches. He is passionate about making emerging tools accessible and mentoring the next generation of designers through experimentation, deep inquiry, and collaborative learning.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

I first discovered architecture through the bustling heart of Lagos, a city shaped by rapid urban growth. Seeing how design influences how people live, work, and connect sparked my curiosity and led me to pursue architecture.

What do you do?

I am an architectural designer, practicing for about 6 years now in Toronto, working on typologies from higher education lab buildings, student residence, to commercial buildings.

What excites you in the work you do?

I’m excited by the intersection of design and emerging technology. Understanding how new tools are transforming design processes challenges us to rethink conventional approaches and unlock new possibilities for the built environment.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

I’m inspired by humanity’s ability to create structure where none exists. Places shaped without architects often reveal our most fundamental needs, showing how culture, community, and human behaviour naturally translate into form.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

My proudest professional accomplishment was lecturing at the University of Waterloo on AI in the built environment, helping inspire and equip the next generation of designers to navigate the opportunities and challenges of emerging technology.
