SAY IT LOUD - Nebraska  Exhibitor

Nebraska Based Designer

Who or what inspires you professionally?

I am inspired by the impact that my work has on the communities in which they are built. As an engineer I design spaces that function to allow others to save lives, provide safe places for people to live and work, and places for children to learn.

STEPHANIE JO GUY

Bio:

The Great designer, Stephanie Guy, PE, LEED AP, has worked in the architectural engineering industry for over 15 years. She is an Associate Principal at Alvine Engineering and designs mechanical systems for buildings of all shapes and sizes. She recently completed a stint on the Architectural Engineering Institute Board of Governors and stays actively involved in the Industry Advisory Committee at her alma mater, the University of Nebraska. She is married with four young girls, and lives in Omaha, Nebraska.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

I first learned about architectural engineering from a cousin while I was in high school. It seemed to be the perfect fit for me – a girl who grew up building things with her Dad and was good at math and science.

What do you do?

As an architectural engineer who specializes in mechanical, I design the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing and fire protection systems for buildings. I get to take what the architect designs and make it function as comfortable space.

What excites you in the work you do?

Bringing a team together and solving a complex problem excites me. It is fun to take something that seems almost impossible and work together to come up with a creative solution that looks good but also functions very well.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

I am inspired by the impact that my work has on the communities in which they are built. As an engineer I design spaces that function to allow others to save lives, provide safe places for people to live and work, and places for children to learn.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

My proudest professional accomplishment is continuing to grow and accelerate in my career, being named an associate principal at Alvine, all while staying active as a volunteer and being a wife and mom to my four girls, and a role model for others.

Featured Project Name:

River Point

Featured Project Location:

Chicago, IL

Featured Project Completion Date:

2016

Role in Featured Project:

Mechanical Engineer

Featured Project Description:

Located in downtown Chicago, sits River Point, a 52 story, LEED Gold, high-rise Class A office building. The unique curved façade with arched entryway reflects beautifully off the river. This project was a true work of integration, specifically in the lobby where it was desired that the mechanical systems have zero impact on the aesthetics of the space. The ductwork and air distribution system needed to be fully concealed in the space and was integrated into the canted stone walls of the lobby.
