SEPIDEH AMIN

Bio:

With over 15 years of experience working for architecture firms from Iran to USA, Sepi has a great deal of experience in the public and private sector, including the design and construction of multiple project types, from single and multi-story classroom buildings to multi-use buildings, campus master planning, and interior design. For over 10 years, Sepi has taught architecture at Tehran University and West Valley College. Currently, Sepi is volunteering at WIA Silicon Valley and BIBI.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

Growing up in Iran, I've always been inspired by architectural elements like domes, tilework, the use of courtyards, muqarnas, calligraphy, and stained-glass windows, often in geometric patterns, which ultimately drove me to pursue architecture.

What do you do?

As a Project Designer at JKAE, I lead the design process from programming, site planning, and schematic design to construction administration. I also volunteer and am an active member of WIA in Silicon Valley and Banou in Building Industry (BIBI).

What excites you in the work you do?

I enjoy the combination of form and function and the creative problem-solving involved in designing visually appealing and practical spaces. I appreciate the emotional impact of beautifully designed spaces and seeing how my work impacts students.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

I’m inspired by Iranian architecture and one of my favorite architects, Zaha Hadid. I am also inspired by all the influential women architects who dedicate themselves to supporting other women in the profession.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

For 15 years, I’ve had the opportunity to teach architecture and share my passion with students. I’m also a founder of BIBI (Banou in Building Industry) - providing support, networking, mentorship, advice, and camaraderie to women in our industry.

Featured Project Description:

As the EVC campus is culturally diverse and the Language Arts program caters to students of different backgrounds, the building is conceived as a ‘cultural center’ and gathering place for formal and informal uses. Centrally located with welcoming forms and features, the center is a multi-cultural hub of social activity and celebration of Language + Culture (Languaculture). Bringing languaculture into the design is a powerful way to connect with diverse audiences and resonate on a deeper level.
