SARA NGAN

Bio:

The great architect, Sara Ngan is an architect with experience on a wide range of projects. She starts each opportunity by considering the totality of people’s experience—from the street, entering a building, and within each room. Sara is a Senior Associate at FXCollaborative and registered architect in New York. She is passionate about the fight for equality and inclusion, which can be seen in the number of initiatives she leads or is deeply involved in, including as co-chair of FXWomen, the firm’s women’s group.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

It was a combination of forces that led me into architecture! I was a bit of a math and science nerd who also enjoyed the arts, and I was luckily exposed to the industry at a young age because my parents are in real estate.

What do you do?

I am a Project Architect and Senior Associate at FXCollaborative. I oversee the day-to-day for several projects under construction and participate in multiple internal initiatives, primarily being co-chair of FXWomen, the firm’s women-focused ERG.

What excites you in the work you do?

I love that every day is different and will have its own set of challenges to figure out. Each challenge presented becomes an opportunity to learn something new, to grow, and to become a better architect and person.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

I work with an amazing group of colleagues that are supportive, encouraging, and determined to change our industry. Our culture values the sharing of information and lessons learned, and I take these goals with me when I lead my projects.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

I have used the wide experience I’ve had in the industry to mentor and encourage young women and minorities to join our profession. If I want to see a more diverse industry, I have to do all I can to make people know there is a place for them.
