Who or what inspires you professionally?

There are so many talented, smart people who are part of my work, and I love to learn new information, techniques from them. I'm inspired on a jobsite when working with amazing trades who take pride in their craft and share their knowledge.

NOVA TAYONA

Bio:

Nova Tayona (OAA, AANB, NSAA) is a Toronto-based great architect, born in Halifax, NS to Filipino immigrants. After completing her architectural studies at Dalhousie University (RAIC Gold Medal), Nova gained invaluable experience at award-winning Ian Macdonald Architect (IMA). Nova’s written work on architecture and the City has appeared in Azure, Canadian Architect, Spacing online and Halifax Magazine; she teaches design studios at the University of Toronto and Toronto Metropolitan University.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

I first became aware of architecture and site when I was a teen. A friend had a house by a brook and the house was tucked in close to it, surrounded by trees. From the inside, you could see and hear these elements and I always think of that house.

What do you do?

I am a design teacher as well as a design practitioner, and enjoy being a mentor and collaborator in both the studio as well as the office.

What excites you in the work you do?

I love seeing the transformation of a site or an existing building and how a well-design building or space can transform how one experiences their day-to-day life.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

Aside from Lockeport Beach House being recognized for a number of sustainable design awards, I am really proud of mentoring a number of Interns into professional licensure. It's very rewarding to see them "launch" into their professional journeys.

Featured Project Description:

Located on a sandy beach, buffered by a tree-lined shore, the site's duality provided a framework for Lockeport Beach House: social/open spaces face filtered, southern ocean views; private areas orient to a spruce forest to the north. Design strategies include use of local craft techniques, attention to siting, passive heating and cooling, increased daylighting and net-zero water. The project has been recognized through a number of design and green building awards and design publications.
