Who or what inspires you professionally?

I am inspired by a challenge, the opportunity to work on projects that are not clear cut. Heritage projects, retrofits and spatially constrained sites, for all their potential headaches - offer the best opportunities to improve our skills.

NIGEL MAK

Bio:

A measured and diligent Architect with experience predominantly covering the multi-residential and commercial sectors. With his background in construction management, he possesses an extensive knowledge of the construction process and is adept at working closely with both clients and builders to deliver high quality project outcomes that value both the design vision and buildability.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

I was an all-rounder in high school, loved design technology and wood working classes. The fusion of creativity and problem solving and naturally lead me to a profession a few my family relatives were also involved in.

What do you do?

I am a Project Architect and Associate at Plus Architecture primarily focusing on the documentation and delivery phases of our project work.

What excites you in the work you do?

Problem solving. Finding rational and elegant solutions to designs that challenge the status quo.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

The completion of Plus’ new studio at 107 Elizabeth St was a particularly challenging project, it exposed me to the values that inspire and excite me professionally. My reward - the opportunity to do it all again on the 226 Flinders lane project.

Featured Project Name:

226 Flinders Lane – Where the Silk Lived

Featured Project Location:

226 Flinders Street, Melbourne

Featured Project Completion Date:

TBC

Role in Featured Project:

Project Architect/Associate

Featured Project Description:

The ground floor lobby features a sculptural, monolithic staircase that is visible from street view. This visual interest connects people on the footpath to the ground floor lobby, enticing them to come in and appreciate the form. Not only is it meant to activate the space, but it also adds a new flavour to the popular Flinders Lane strip. Not just making a statement but also a lasting landmark in the years to come.
