GUNZELMAN architecture + interior

SAY IT LOUD - Ohio Exhibitor

Ohio Based Designer

Who or what inspires you professionally?

I am inspired by many things. Nature, music and art all become elements I use in my design palette. If I had to pick an architect, it would be Zaha Hadid.

LAURIE A. GUNZELMAN

Bio:
The great designer, Laurie Gunzelman, AIA began her career with an education in Fine Arts. After living in Europe for several years, she refocused her attention to architecture. She returned to education at the age of 29 to receive a Bachelor of Science and Masters of Architecture Degree from The Ohio State University. During this time, Ms. Gunzelman was honored with an AIA Medal of Merit. Always striving to be a leader in the profession, Ms. Gunzelman started her architecture studio in 2009.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?
My father was an aeronautical engineer. My interest of architecture was elevated when living in Europe. Architecture is celebrated and I knew I found something that would allow me to combine art, math and science.

What do you do?
I own a small architectural studio with a focus on urban design, the modern aesthetic and the integration of the exterior and interior skins of a building. I am a working principal of the firm.

What excites you in the work you do?
Being an architect is a practicing art form that affects people’s lives everyday. Architecture has the ability to shape behavior and elevate thinking. Being a part of the design process and to execute ideas makes each of my days beautiful.

Who or what inspires you professionally?
I am inspired by many things. Nature, music and art all become elements I use in my design palette. If I had to pick an architect, it would be Zaha Hadid.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?
I have been blessed throughout my career; selecting one moment is difficult. This past year GAI purchased a building and renovated it into the studio’s new home. To provide this to the architects on staff has been an extraordinary moment.

Featured Project Name:
Upper Arlington Veterinary Hospital

Featured Project Location:
Upper Arlington, OH

Featured Project Completion Date:
2019

Role in Featured Project:
Architect, Designer, Project Manager

Featured Project Description:
The design solution for the existing unmemorable office building was to create a brand identity for the Veterinary Practice through the architecture. New additions would house the primary functions of the practice. The horizontal exam box becomes a visual cue showcasing the exam rooms. The double height frame identifies the main entrance and exhibits the brand logo at night through internal illumination. The façade markets the hospital through the daily activity of the practice.
