Who or what inspires you professionally?

The designs of many minority architects encourage me as I grow in the profession. The ability to create inspirational designs for others continues to motivate me.

LARRY RAY TRAVIS JR.

Bio:

The great architect, Larry Travis is a LEED AP BD+C accredited and NCARB certified architect in Washington DC. He completed his Bachelor of Architecture at Mississippi State University and MBA at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Larry has gained experience in markets such as commercial, office, institutional, cultural, healthcare, and retail. He uses building materials as a medium to create work that is holistic, thoughtful, and unassuming while focusing on designing the structure and the experience.

 

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

I first learned about the profession as a young child after being fascinated by the human capacity to build amazing and unique structures. It was much later in college that I decided this was the career field I wanted to explore.

What do you do?

Currently, I am an architect at the Smithsonian Institution where I help support the planning and development of museum projects.

What excites you in the work you do?

I enjoy the idea that many of the projects I support aid in promoting cultural learning for those local and around the world.

The designs of many minority architects encourage me as I grow in the profession. The ability to create inspirational designs for others continues to motivate me.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

Licensure has been a major accomplishment for me. However, serving my community remains an ongoing goal I aim to achieve throughout my career.

Featured Project Description:

The design of Greater Heights Youth and Urban Development Center fosters a sense of place, while renewing a vision of hope for the public by investing in the academic, physical, and emotional development of children and teens. The programming of the spaces was developed to stimulate change through the empowerment of youths and their involvement in the community.
