KYLIE STEPHENS

Bio:

I am an outgoing, attentive, and ambitious student who is always seeking experiences to learn, expand my knowledge, and become well rounded with many skills and in multiple fields of work. My education in architecture began at Howard University, where I discovered my desire to design and create, as well as learn to hone my collaborative and efficiency skills. In pursuing my Master of Architecture, my goal is to create spaces for how we move about and interact with the world.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

I discovered that architecture was for me, by chance. I was considering studying engineering but realized that I had an opportunity right in front of me to study something I've been interested in since I was young, and I took it.

What do you do?

I am a 4th year design student at Howard University.

What excites you in the work you do?

I'm most excited about representing Black women within the field of architecture, when I graduate from Howard. I feel as if our voices are not often heard enough, and maybe setting a precedent for other Black girls in the future is important to me.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

One of my studio professors has been a source of inspiration for me since I started the architecture program at Howard. She has been encouraging during my academic career at Howard and has inspired me with her own professional endeavors.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

I completed my first professional internship this past summer. I felt so proud to be one of the few Black women working at the firm that I was at. It felt good to be a student in a position to work, learn, and absorb as much as possible.
