Who or what inspires you professionally?

My father inspires me. He's always encouraged me to pursue my passions. I've always admired how he pushes pass challenges and looks to things in a positive light. Any time I have an idea, he's always there to listen.

JOSHUA DERICK YARBROUGH

Bio:

The great designer, Joshua Yarbrough is a Memphis native who has received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Architecture and Interior Architecture from the University of Memphis. He is also a graphic designer and musician who currently works with other local artists around the Memphis area helping them to elevate their ideas through the power of design. He is now attending University of Memphis for a Master of Architecture.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

I've always known about architecture as a child, but I never went out of my way to pursue it until my 2nd year in college. I had a scholarship as a vocal performance major at first but after a year I wanted to change it to architecture.

What do you do?

Right now, I'm still continuing my studies as a 1st year grad at the University of Memphis. GO TIGERS! Besides from school, I freelance as an Architectural Designer with renderings, and graphics.

What excites you in the work you do? Who or what inspires you professionally?

Knowing that as a designer I can make an impact on my community. There is so much potential for growth in the city of Memphis; I love my city and the people. I'm hoping to continue finding ways to design for the communities I've grown around.

My father inspires me. He's always encouraged me to pursue my passions. I've always admired how he pushes pass challenges and looks to things in a positive light. Any time I have an idea, he's always there to listen.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

Being able to attend my first NOMA conference. It was such an amazing experience; I was able to get so many connections and meet other architects from all states.

Featured Project Description:

The studio was tasked with creating a proposal for an addition to the original Fogelman College of Business & Economics on the University of Memphis campus. The program includes a flexible event space, auditorium, interior courtyard, cafe, and a student collaboration space. It was important to make sure that the students who would occupy this building would feel the urge to stay inside instead of going other places between classes.
