Who or what inspires you professionally?

How a built environment impacts the people and engages the community inspires my work. I like to imagine how what we design will impact the users in the community and how future generations will use the space.

JOETTE FLORA

Bio:

With over 25 years of experience, the Great Designer, Joette Flora, serves as a Senior Project Architect at BOUDREAUX. She has degrees in both architecture and civil engineering, making her a master at detailing, especially when it comes to marrying structural and architectural components. Her focus and follow-through are of great benefit as she carries overall design intent through to the construction details of each project. These same strengths make her an expert in building code research and compliance.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

I was always passionate about art, mathematics and science. During my senior year, Architecture seemed to be a good fit for my strengths and interests.

What do you do?

I am a Senior Project Architect with over 20 years experience.

What excites you in the work you do?

I love seeing the design during construction. Seeing your work come to life and the nuances that make working with different contractors so unique. It makes sense on paper, but does it work in real life? That's exciting.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

How a built environment impacts the people and engages the community inspires my work. I like to imagine how what we design will impact the users in the community and how future generations will use the space.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

Finishing the USC School of Law project was an incredible honor. On that same block sits Taylor House, a historic home we are currently renovating. Witnessing it come back to life with restored historic elements and natural light is inspirational.

At over 180,000 square feet, the School of Law is the focal point for the legal community of South Carolina. The life of the school is a central courtyard which serves as a reference point as well as an outdoor space. Within the building, major circulation and program components including monumental stair, café, and library commons and reading room foster community and connectivity. The school harmoniously occupies an entire city block linking campus to the downtown urban core.
