Who or what inspires you professionally?

I am inspired by the curiosity, passion and dedication of my team, colleagues, customers, partners and communities at the City of Melbourne.

JOCELYN CHIEW

Bio:

Jocelyn Chiew is a registered Architect, registered Landscape Architect, Urban Designer and the Director of City Design - a highly awarded multidisciplinary studio, at the City of Melbourne. She is a UK-born Australian, with roots in Borneo and China. Jocelyn has 18 years’ experience in the planning, design, delivery and management of vibrant urban places. She has been a juror on multiple design awards and competition juries and taught at the School of Design, University of Melbourne.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

I was introduced to the topic of architecture at a pub in Parkville, when I was enrolled in my first year of study at the University of Melbourne. I was studying science at the time, with the hope of becoming a veterinarian.

What do you do?

I lead the City of Melbourne’s award winning City Design studio. We are a multidisciplinary practice of approximately 50 practitioners. We have expertise in architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, design review and industrial design.

What excites you in the work you do? Who or what inspires you professionally?

I am excited by the potential to deliver outstanding public outcomes that benefit our diverse communities and the environment for generations to come.

I am inspired by the curiosity, passion and dedication of my team, colleagues, customers, partners and communities at the City of Melbourne.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

I commenced the role of Director City Design in 2020, a lifelong dream. I feel privileged to be at the helm of a studio that prides itself on world class, evidence based design centred on partnership with our diverse communities.

Featured Project Description:

The Design Excellence Program demonstrates the City of Melbourne’s commitment to high quality design in our built environment. The program comprises of four components: leadership, design review, competitive design and awards. A Design Excellence Advisory Committee provides a platform for industry, academia and community to engage in design topics in the city. The committee advises Council on the delivery of the program, and explores opportunities for improved collaboration.
