JANET ZUCKERMAN

Bio:

The Great Designer, Janet Zuckerman, is from Greenville, South Carolina. Janet's father is a veteran of the US Air Force and met her mother when he was stationed in South Korea. Together, they raised Janet and her older brother across the country and across the world before settling in upstate South Carolina. Always eager to take on challenges, Janet earned her Bachelor of Architecture from Virginia Tech where she met and married her college sweetheart. They have two children together.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

As a child, I was obsessed with all things Barbie. I spent more hours making out doll houses with found objects. Architecture was a gentle leap. Every step of my educational journey only reinforced I was where I was supposed to be.

What do you do?

I am growing in my role as a project architect. Learning how to manage a project team and embracing the journey of project development. The building, regardless of the practice area, are testimonials to the beauty of the design process.

What excites you in the work you do?

The way proportions and patterns create rules that can be accentuated or broken to reinforce an idea. Sometimes it is the thrill of solving a puzzle, understanding how these components can come together to create something tangible.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

Licensure! But also, as a bi-racial Asian American, navigating the duality of race and culture shaped my identity. Each milestone in my story, the victories, and the setbacks, defines my voice as a member of this creative community.
