Bio:

Hussain Ali is a great architect and heritage conservation professional based in Toronto. His work connects material conservation, digital documentation, and public storytelling, with experience on Lahore Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Lahore. Shaped by work in Pakistan, Scotland, and Canada, he focuses on how historic places carry memory across cultures.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

Growing up in Multan, I was surrounded by shrines, bazaars, old city walls, and layered streets. Architecture became interesting to me when I realized buildings were not just objects, but carriers of memory, belief, and daily life.

 

What do you do?

I currently work as a Heritage Advisor with the Ontario’s Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism, supporting heritage planning and review work. My practice connects architecture, heritage research, documentation, and public storytelling.

What excites you in the work you do?

I enjoy the point where research, material care, and storytelling come together. Conservation is exciting to me because it can make historic places feel present again.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

I am inspired by the late Aga Khan IV’s belief in culture as a source of dignity, and by craftspeople whose knowledge is carried across generations. Together, they remind me that heritage is living knowledge, care, and continuity.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

My proudest achievement is contributing to the conservation of Lahore Fort. It taught me that heritage work is also about restoring dignity, memory, and public connection, not only repairing buildings.

Featured Project Description:

The Picture Wall at Lahore Fort is a monumental Mughal mural façade , stretching approximately 450 metres and layered with glazed tile, fresco, and mosaic work. Its conservation brought together material research, traditional craft, and digital documentation to safeguard a living record of imperial imagination, local workmanship, and the cultural memory of Lahore.
