HANA GETACHEW

Bolé Road Texitles

SAY IT LOUD - NOW Exhibitor

New York Based Designer

Who or what inspires you professionally?

There were several women designers and business owners that I looked up to right out of school. They must have subconsciously inspired me the idea to start my own business, which I didn’t really plan on.

Hana Getachew

Bio:

The great designer, Hana Getachew started Bolé Road Textiles out of a desire to merge her love of Ethiopian handwoven fabrics with her career in interior design. During her eleven years at a major New York City architecture firm Hana realized her affinity for vibrant colors and graphic patterns was a direct result of her upbringing in a home filled with amazing traditional Ethiopian textiles. Her designs for Bolé Road are an homage to that cultural inheritance and a reflection of her own personal aesthetic.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

I started Cornell as a fine arts major. I knew early on that the program wasn’t a fit. I was a member in a group called the Minority Organization for Artists Ar- chitects and Planners. There I met a student that was in the interior design program.

What do you do?

I am a textile designer and business owner.

What excites you in the work you do?

I love that I get to be a steward of my culture and share stories of Ethiopia through my work.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

My products will soon be carried by DWR. This is my proudest accomplishment by far.

New York

Featured Project Completion Date:

May 2019

Role in Featured Project:

Designer

Featured Project Description:

The Harar Collection is a line inspired by a region in Ethiopia with the same name. We were drawn to the region because of the stark contrast between the fortress-like architecture and the fluidity and color of the local dress. The textile patterns of this line vary greatly, ranging from minimal grid forms to ornate geometric embroidery, capturing the essence of the city which inspired this eponymous line.
