Who or what inspires you professionally? 

My greatest inspiration are my parents. As Jamaican immigrants, they instilled the importance of hard work and performing at a higher level than everyone else. It is this work ethic that has been the foundation for my practice and every project.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

I learned about architecture in college. The problem solving, creativity and graphic nature really mesmerized me. Like many architects, I drew a lot growing up but did not realize it would translate into the labor of love I have today.

 

What do you do?

I am firm president of my own design practice, Syntony Design Collaborative, and a Program Manager for the City of Atlanta. I also sit on Atlanta’ Urban Design Commission which enforces regulations for Atlanta’s historic properties.

What excites you in the work you do?

The ability for architecture to create a more beautiful, place-based, healthy and equitable buildings and and urban spaces that serves the greater population . I embrace the responsibility for a creating a healthier urban built environments.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

My proudest accomplishment was to lead the effort to redevelop sites like the Atlanta Life Buildings in the African-American neighborhood of “Sweet Auburn” in Atlanta. Projects like this allows me to make a positive impact in our urban environments.

Featured Project Description:

Herndon Plaza was home to Atlanta Life Insurance Company, one of the most important symbols of African American success in the City of Atlanta. The new Herndon Plaza Hotel Development provides a luxury boutique hotel with public facing amenities. The design restores the Herndon Plaza and introduces modern spaces for a new generation of entrepreneurs. The new five story hotel tower draws its inspiration from the original Herndon Plaza and is topped by “crown” of glazing with spectacular views.
