COURTNEY TARR

McKinney York Architects

SAY IT LOUD - TEXAS Exhibitor
Texas Based Designer

Who or what inspires you professionally?

I am inspired by other creative fields like art, fashion, and culinary art, and believe that looking outside of the built environment for inspiration can contribute to unexpected but meaningful design concepts.

COURTNEY TARR

Bio:

The great designer, Courtney joined McKinney York in 2013. She has worked on multiple technical renovations and new construction projects as both Project Manager and Project Architect, including the major maintenance and renovation of Building 75 for the Texas Military Department and the Pool Cabana at Canyon Lake. She adroitly balances her projects’ technical needs with their aesthetic goals. Courtney ensures her projects are executed to specification and with a high level of quality.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

From an early age I had a passion for art and creative expression. After studying physics and traveling the world, I found myself enrolled in architecture school, my first real exposure to the profession. I knew immediately I was in the right place.

What do you do?

I design, manage, collaborate and mentor. I work on many different project types and in different roles, and I consider each new undertaking as an opportunity to contribute to design excellence.

What excites you in the work you do?

Turning ideas into environments, places and things that can be experienced and that can have a lasting impact on individuals and communities.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

I am proud to have a fulfilling, growing career while also being an engaged parent. Both sides can be demanding and I am proud that I am able to model commitment and intention for my two young girls.

Featured Project Name:

Canyon Lake Pool Cabana

Featured Project Location:

Canyon Lake, Texas

Featured Project Completion Date:

July 2019

Role in Featured Project:

Project Architect and Project Manager

Featured Project Description:

Downhill from the main house and overlooking the lake, this simple rectangle with massive retractable openings is oriented to capture prevailing breezes and funnel views through to the pool and lake. It is nestled into the hill to form a recreation space that is truly connected to the landscape. To minimize the impact of the pavilion on views from the main house and to provide a wildflower spring, a meadow was created on the roof of the pavilion.
