SAY IT LOUD - SOUTH DAKOTA Exhibitor
South Dakota Based Designer

Who or what inspires you professionally?

I enjoy keeping historic buildings for future generations, whether through small modifications to keep up with today’s codes, reworking facades to more closely mimic their original appearance, or repurposing existing buildings for new functions.

CAROLEE MILLER

Bio:

Born in South Dakota, Carolee’s family moved to Indiana in 1998. She graduated from Judson University with a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture in 2008 and a Master of Architecture in 2010 with a concentration in Traditional Architecture and Urbanism. Until 2014, she worked for architecture firms in Indiana, including designing a small project on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. She then returned to South Dakota to work at an architecture firm in Sioux Falls.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

When preparing to take my PSATs, I learned that I needed to list a field of interest. My Mom suggested architecture since I was good at math, science, and art. The literature I received afterward looked interesting.

What do you do?

Carolee is an architectural technician and construction administrator who keeps projects organized and on track. She works on a wide variety of projects including commercial buildings, multi-family buildings and higher education facilities.

What excites you in the work you do?

I love digging into the details of buildings from before 1920, whether that’s by analyzing the building itself or looking through the original drawings.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

I enjoy keeping historic buildings for future generations, whether through small modifications to keep up with today’s codes, reworking facades to more closely mimic their original appearance, or repurposing existing buildings for new functions.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

I’m not sure I have any one accomplishment or achievement. I feel fulfilled as long as our firm puts out a quality project and the clients are pleased no matter the project type.

Featured Project Name:

McVicker Plaza

Featured Project Location:

Vermillion, South Dakota

Featured Project Completion Date:

2019

Role in Featured Project:

Carolee was deeply involved on all phases of the project from the start of design to the completion of construction. She designed the new front façade to mimic the historic appearance as closely as possible while still accommodating the structural changes to the second floor.

Featured Project Description:

A local development company leapt at the chance to create meaningful improvements to historic Main Street. Generous offices were planned to recruit and retain the best staff, with centralized collaborative space. A Vermillion-red tiled cube is the focal point of the shared entry, reflecting the primary school color of the university and the namesake color of the college town. The cube houses a small conference room available to small groups and individuals working with the company.
