Bio:

Originating from Haiti, the Great Designer Bedgid Laguerre's journey unfolded in the US, where her architectural passion grew. Graduating from UCF in 2022, Bedgid's academic path mirrors her dedication. As Women in Architecture Co-Chair and her role as a Board member for Black Architects In the Making in Orlando, she demonstrates her commitment to promote diversity and nurture emerging voices. Bedgid aspires to uplift underserved communities by merging designs and advocacy for an impactful built environment.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

I was introduced to the world of architecture early on, thanks to my civil engineer father and an Interior Design enthusiast mother. After attending my first design class, I knew I had found the right path and environment for me.

What do you do?

I am currently an Architectural Designer based in Orlando. I'm also actively engaged in my community, serving as the Co-Chair of Women in Architecture (WIA Orlando) and as a Board Member for Black Architects in the Making (BAM Orlando).

What excites you in the work you do?

I find my purpose in elevating my community. Architecture has the power to shape and amplify lives, and by building spaces that resonate with people’s needs, cultures, and identities, I believe we contribute to an inclusive and better society.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

On my journey, Mariam Kamara and David Adjaye greatly inspire me. Their architecture uplifts diverse communities. Kamara's local sustainability commitment and Adjaye's culturally rooted designs reshaped my perspective on architecture's social impact.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

I organized a WIA leadership panel, moderating two esteemed women, including our firm's Director of Architecture. Conquering my fear of visibility and public speaking, I seized the chance with confidence, resulting in a seamless and impactful panel.

Featured Project Name:

Re-Introducing Favelas on the Riverwalk

Featured Project Location:

Tampa, Riverwalk_ Unbuilt Student work

Featured Project Completion Date:

May 2022

Role in Featured Project:

Designer

Featured Project Description:

My roots in this project dig deep into the heart of favelas, specifically inspired by Jalousie in Haiti. Despite their notorious reputation, favelas have masterfully woven a fabric of interconnectedness and solidarity. The community takes advantage of subtle shifts in terrain, strategically positioned balconies, and inviting communal spaces. These elements collaborate harmoniously, nurturing interactions among residents while creating an unbreakable bond between inhabitants and nature.
