California Based Designer

Who or what inspires you professionally?

I am inspired by the generous opportunities to have architecture be a force for public good, that the creation of public and private spaces can reflect the diversity of our cultures, that architecture can be transformative through social engagement.

ANTHONY POON

Bio:

Anthony Poon, FAIA, is an award-winning architect, author, artist and musician. His Los Angeles company, Poon Design Inc.—a multi-disciplinary architecture studio serving national and international clients—has completed over 300 educational, residential, commercial, and cultural buildings, honored with 50 national awards. Born in San Francisco’s Chinatown, Anthony received his degrees from University of California, Berkeley and Harvard University.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

It started with Lego and some crayons and paper. I was four. I liked to make things, envisioning worlds for my toy dinosaurs or a place where my stuffed animals could have conversations. Years later, I realized there was a job out there for me.

What do you do?

As an architect and author, I see myself as a storyteller. Design is a language for all to express their dreams, goals and optimism. Like a leader of a jazz band, I guide and nurture the inclusive talents of our design studio.

What excites you in the work you do?

I believe that good design belongs to everyone. Whether the design of a house or school, park bench or a corporate logo, whether a church for a non-profit institution or affordable housing—I am excited to offer design for the many and the few.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

I am inspired by the generous opportunities to have architecture be a force for public good, that the creation of public and private spaces can reflect the diversity of our cultures, that architecture can be transformative through social engagement.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

In 2022 with President Obama as keynote speaker, I was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA) for “exceptional contributions to the national industry and society” and “architectural excellence.”
