Bio:

Anne-Marie Armstrong is a great architect, educator, and co-founder of AAmp Studio. Her practice spans projects across the U.S. and Canada and has earned awards from the AIA, Architect Magazine, The Architect's Newspaper, and others, including AN’s Best Small Practice in Canada (2025) and AZURE’s Emerging Architecture Firm (2026). She is a founding member of BAIDA and holds architecture degrees from the University of Waterloo and Yale University.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

I came to architecture through a love of drawing, writing, photography, and problem-solving. Today, I'm driven by a curiosity of how places shape our lives and how thoughtful design can help communities preserve what matters while adapting to change.

 

What do you do?

I am an architect, educator, and researcher. As co-founder of AAmp Studio and Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, my work explores adaptive reuse, cultural memory, and inclusive design across practice, teaching, and research.

What excites you in the work you do?

I am interested in architecture, its ability to reveal potential in overlooked places. Through practice, teaching, and research, I explore cultural memory and inclusive design to create spaces that support communities and everyday life.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

I'm inspired by people who challenge how we see the built environment and open up new possibilities and perspectives. Their insights continually expand my understanding of architecture as a tool for memory, care, and change.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

My greatest accomplishment has been building a practice where design, teaching, and research strengthen one another. Through AAmp Studio, I’ve worked to advance inclusive, equitable, and community-centered design while creating meaningful impact.

Featured Project Description:

Jones Commons transforms a former 1950s medical clinic in Toronto's Greektown into a mixed-use building with housing and creative workspaces. Rather than demolish, the project extends the building's legacy of care through adaptive reuse, preserving cultural memory while adding three rental units, a family residence, and flexible commercial space. It demonstrates how existing neighbourhood buildings can support sustainable urban growth through stewardship, continuity, and care.
