AMIT S UPADHYE

Bio:

Amit Upadhye was brought up influenced by the works of Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn in Ahmedabad, India. He teaches as Adjunct Faculty Arizona State University’s, graduate, and undergraduate programs since 2002. His projects have been on AIA home tours and published by Phoenix Home & Garden, Images Arizona, Inside-Outside, Arizona Republic publications and Dwell, Archdaily, Architizer. He has talked at institutions of US, Singapore, and India. Before starting his studio, he worked for Morphosis.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

I was 17 and I was looking at different professions like engineering and design. During that time my dad suggested Architecture and the word started resonating as it was a déjà vu. I was innately attracted to the profession like a deep calling.

What do you do?

As an architect I passionately craft buildings in my studio since 2016. The East gave me the ancient wisdom while the West opened me up to a plethora of liberating works of Architecture. My mantra: Everything is a detail, and a detail is everything.

What excites you in the work you do?

Sun thrives the life on the earth. I understand the sun thru my work. Architecture is a hide and seek with the sun and a fun game under the sun. Sun plays a major role in forming and informing. Then I watch the game of unfoldment of form.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

At The Essence of the Desert House the sun rays celebrate client wedding anniversary by illuminating a window at sunrise and by setting in a notch on a wall. Besides the poetics, I have also harnessed the pragmatics of the sun by solar power.

Featured Project Description:

The Polaris House, in Paradise Valley, Arizona, for a NASA Planetary Scientist and a mathematician, situates a bathroom renovation and a Guest House to ‘Arizona School’ house, designed by Eddie Jones, Architect, in relation to the path of the sun, the geometry of the sky at night, the constellations. Every detail sustains the principle that the bathroom is a contemplative place, a sanctuary and an observatory, a place that belongs to the present, dedicated to bodily and spiritual renewal.
