Bio:

Amin is a Toronto-based architect and partner at studio ksa. The studio’s work focuses on community-centred projects including schools, libraries, childcare centres, university buildings, and adaptive re-use projects. Born in Tanzania and raised in Toronto, he attended local public schools before earning degrees from MIT and McGill University. Together with partner Maggie Bennedsen, he leads the studio’s projects, encompassing both new builds and renovations across diverse scales and typologies.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

An interest in architecture emerged during my engineering studies via optional architectural history and visual arts courses. Design studio electives followed, eventually leading to a shift in my academic and career path toward architecture.

 

What do you do?

As a studio, we all partake in everything: finding work, searching for meaning and beauty in the work, getting it built, managing budgets and schedules. Finding ways to respect the natural world and time for family life are intrinsic to the process.

What excites you in the work you do?

I am excited by a design process that is rigorous and thoughtful, not preconceived, bringing a sense of surprise and remaining inventive yet deliberate. I value relationships with users and stakeholders passionate about the environments they shape.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

For me, inspiration stems from finding something that is greater than the sum of its parts. I am inspired and humbled by those who have placed their trust in me: my parents, partner, son, and the founding principals of the studio I now co-lead.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

It’s not a singular project but perhaps a moment, very often the day a project is open to its users: a school occupied by young minds, an ice rink for a public skate, a theatre at intermission. The vitality of the moment is palpable and gratifying.

Featured Project Description:

This project revitalized and expanded public, production, rehearsal and education spaces at Young People’s Theatre, Canada’s largest professional theatre for young audiences, serving approximately 150,000 patrons annually through performances and arts education programs. Accessibility upgrades improved access throughout the heritage building. New rehearsal, education and production spaces feature durable finishes, strategic glazing for visibility and connection, and custom wayfinding graphics.
