My community, the Memphians around me, inspire me to create, to reimagine, and to improve the built environment.

AMANDA WHITAKER

Bio:

Amanda has been an Architect at ANF since 2001. She is an active member of AIA Memphis, previous Board Member, and participant in the AIA Memphis Emerging Professional Leadership Program. Since 2007, Amanda has been an NCARB Supervising Mentor helping recent architectural graduates prepare for the Architectural Registration Exam.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

In high school I wanted to be a doctor but after volunteering in a hospital, I discovered I was a germaphobe & needed a plan B! I was drawn to Architecture because I enjoy creative problem solving and now, I can’t imagine doing anything else!

What do you do?

I am an Architect, Firm Associate, & Senior Project Manager at ANF designing agile, creative, & relevant spaces. I lead a multidisciplinary A/E Project Team through all phases of our projects.

What excites you in the work you do? Who or what inspires you professionally?

I enjoy finding nimble ways to make bold Architectural moves with a limited budget.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

My proudest professional accomplishment was winning a National AIA Education Facility Design award for Crosstown High.

Featured Project Description:

Evergreen Presbyterian is a renovation of a 1920’s commercial storefront for an established yet downsizing Congregation, reimagining the Church archetype for the modern world, creating a flexible space that evokes awe and wonder, facilitates varied secular community activities while simultaneously transcending as a Sacred Space. We sought to communicate the gravity of their tradition while concurrently supporting their experimentation of faith in the modern age.

Featured Project Description:

Crosstown High is a flexible, non-static, adaptable space nested in the heart of a former Sears distribution warehouse. It supports the evolution in education, technology & provides an environment for teachers & students alike to adapt & grow as learners & innovators. Situated in the iconic Art Deco building, this location provides students with multi-generational exposure & mentoring from various professionals and community partners who live and work in this vertical urban village.
